The Making of Killer Copy

The back story

If 10 year old me had followed her dream of writing books for a living from her garden shed, the story of Killer Copy would probably be a whole lot shorter. And different. Alas, she did not – although the writing in a shed part I’m glad has not come to life.

Instead, I grappled with a mirage of different dreams ranging from working as a vet or sealion trainer, to running my own Estate Agents. Eventually, after studying Law at A-Level, I moved onto completing a Law Degree (which wasn’t without its moments of trying to swap courses and swearing I would never work in the legal field once I left University).

Of course, that didn’t entirely work out, and whilst I did work in the charity sector as well as a questionable 2-week stint in an insolvency firm which again solidified why I didn’t want to work in the legal sector – I still found myself dipping in and out of the law (work wise) in different capacities.

If you looked back through my twenties, you’d have found me stressing out as an emergency call handler for the police, enduring a painful six months on minimum wage at a local conveyancing firm, and a final three years as a Personal Assistant to a Criminal Law Defence Solicitor. All with an unexpected season abroad as a Sports Entertainer beforehand. Because who doesn’t like to mix things up a bit?

What next?

And so, after deciding to leave my PA job with no job to go to, I came up with the brilliant idea to set up my own business. I had zero clue what I was doing, whether I even wanted to be self-employed, or how I would possibly make it work. But somehow, I did. I spent over a year working for myself (and for an agency) as a Virtual Assistant and couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of this sooner. “Genius”, I thought!

Until the harsh realisation came that I bloody hated admin and diary management. What once I thought was my jam, became quite quickly my marmite, and I longed for a get-out. Part of my work involved me writing blogs, captions, and newsletters and when I was praised for ‘doing all the things’, I soon realised I was missing a trick.

You mean, there was actually a separate job title for this?!

I’d been blogging for years, and writing came like second nature to me. I’d always wanted to be ‘a writer’ but had passed it off as not being a viable career. And all of a sudden, it felt totally doable.

Anyway, I did all the copywriting courses, read all the books and freebies, and quite frankly ditched half the knowledge in the bin as it was full of tosh. I’m not a fan of manipulation, intimidation, or any other kind of sleazy sales tactics and sadly, that’s what a lot of the leading moguls promote.

I ain’t no leading mogul. Yet.

Welcome to Killer Copy

After setting up under Amy Cub Writes a couple of months into 2021, I soon realised it was a bit of a shite name that in no way represented what I wanted to be. I mean it did what it says on the tin, but we need a little more than that right?

And so, Killer Copy was born from my currently unregistered married name of over three years (sorry hubby!) Killingbeck, and my desire to create, well, killer copy.

I’m here to ditch the ick, squeeze out the sleaze, and screw the rules! So, whether that’s sales pages, email sequences, social captions, newsletters, blogs, or something else, I’m ready to inject some serious soul into your business.

Because I believe you get to be whole-heartedly yourself to attract your dream clients. You don’t have to make a load of shit up to get people to like you or buy from you. You don’t have to shy away from what you really think. And you don’t have to try to be like everyone else. Your dream clients are you, so be who you want to attract.
